A discovery stay lets you try daily life in Thailand before you sell a house, give up a tenancy or sign a long contract. It works best when you know what you are testing. These are the questions to settle before you book, and the things to notice while you are there.
Before you book
- What exactly is included: the room, meals, cleaning, activities, airport transfers, local transport?
- What are the cancellation and refund terms, including if you have to leave early for health reasons?
- Can support or care be added during the stay if it is needed, and at what price?
- If you decide to stay longer, what would change in the price and the contract? Ask rather than assume that anything carries over.
- Who is your contact during the stay, and how do you reach them at night?
Stays of 7 to 14 days, 1 to 3 months or 6 to 12 months are possible only where a provider offers them. Compare what each one includes rather than the headline price.
Health, insurance and entry rules

How long you can stay without a visa depends on your passport and the rules at the time. Longer stays usually need a visa. Check the current rules on the official sources before you book, not after.
Travel insurance
Make sure your policy covers the whole stay and any existing medical conditions you have declared. Private hospital treatment in Thailand is expensive without cover.
Medicines
Some medicines that are common in the UK are controlled in Thailand. Check the rules for everything you take before you travel, carry prescriptions, and bring enough for the stay.

- A normal weekday, not only the welcome days: how do you actually spend your time?
- The heat at midday, the noise at night, and how comfortable your room is.
- How easy it is to get to shops, a pharmacy, a clinic and the nearest hospital.
- Whether you meet people you would enjoy seeing regularly.
- How staff respond when you ask for something small, and how quickly.
- How you feel about the distance from family after the first couple of weeks.
Questions to answer honestly afterwards
- Would I want to live here all year, including the hottest and wettest months?
- Does the full cost, including insurance, visas and travel home, fit my budget for years, not months?
- If I needed more help in future, what would happen here?
- What does my family think, and how would we stay in touch?
